The Mission

Democratizing Scientific Knowledge

🌐

The Knowledge Gap

Scientific knowledge is often inaccessible to readers who prefer Indian languages. SciWiki works to bridge this gap by developing reliable, well-referenced and accessible scientific content.
🇮🇳

Language Empowerment

We aim to build a lasting scientific knowledge base in Hindi, Telugu and other Indian languages, enabling communities to learn, contribute and share knowledge in their preferred languages.
🔬

Scientific Coverage

From fundamental sciences and biodiversity to agriculture, health, inventions and emerging technologies, SciWiki encourages contributions across scientific disciplines.

Our vision: A multilingual scientific knowledge commons where reliable scientific information can be discovered, understood, improved and shared by people across India.

Respectful and evidence-based documentation: Traditional and indigenous knowledge should be documented with appropriate attribution and reliable sources. Clearly distinguish cultural descriptions, traditional claims and scientifically tested findings.

Priority Areas for Interns

SciWiki interns can help build a strong foundation by focusing on these five areas:

1. Biodiversity and Species Taxonomy
Document plants, birds, insects, fungi, ecosystems, species classifications and conservation efforts.
2. Science and Technology in India
Create articles about Indian scientists, research institutions, inventions, discoveries and technological achievements.
3. Health, Agriculture and Environment
Develop accessible scientific articles about public health, food, agriculture, water, climate and sustainability.
4. Core Scientific Concepts
Explain physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics clearly and accurately in Indic languages.
5. Emerging Technologies
Expand coverage of artificial intelligence, biotechnology, space science, clean energy, robotics and advanced materials.

How It Works

1
Pick an article
Choose a science topic from your task list or identify a relevant article that needs to be created or improved in an Indic language.
2
Draft and translate
Write naturally in the target language. Translate relevant headings, infobox labels and template parameters where appropriate.
3
Cite and review
Add reliable sources and inline citations. Proofread the article and check links, images, categories and terminology.
4
Submit and connect
Submit the work for project review. Where appropriate, connect equivalent language articles through Wikidata and follow the target wiki's publication process.

Article Quality Guidelines

Every SciWiki article should aim to be accurate, accessible, verifiable and well organised. The following checklist reflects the project's current contribution guidelines.

Quick Checklist

  • At least 6 KB of meaningful, readable text, excluding images, templates and infoboxes, according to the project guideline.
  • At least 2 reliable, independent sources with inline citations.
  • At least 2 specific and relevant categories.
  • Aim for 3 interlanguage links through Wikidata, where equivalent articles exist.
  • Translate relevant infobox labels, headings and template parameters.
  • Use appropriate freely licensed images, including media from Wikimedia Commons.
  • Proofread grammar, facts, formatting, links and scientific terminology.

Content and Style

  • Article length: Aim for at least 6 KB of meaningful, readable article text, excluding images, templates and infoboxes. Confirm how the target wiki measures article size before submission.
  • Tone and language: Use a clear, neutral and encyclopedic tone. Avoid literal, awkward or unreviewed machine translations.
  • Translation completeness: Translate relevant content, section headings, infobox labels and template parameters into the target language.
  • Scientific accuracy: Use appropriate scientific terminology and explain specialised concepts clearly. Distinguish established findings from hypotheses and uncertainty.
  • Proofreading: Check grammar, facts, formatting consistency and link functionality before submitting.
  • Reliable sources: Prefer peer-reviewed publications, academic books, recognised scientific institutions and other reputable sources.
  • Inline citations: Support important scientific statements with references that readers can verify. Use at least two reliable, independent sources as required by the project guideline.
  • Neutrality and verifiability: Follow the relevant wiki's policies on neutral point of view, verifiability, reliable sourcing and permitted use of automated tools.
  • Copyright and media: Prefer appropriately licensed images hosted on Wikimedia Commons. Verify the licence and attribution requirements before reusing media. Do not copy copyrighted text without permission.

Formatting and Metadata

  • Infoboxes: Include an appropriate infobox when useful and supported by the target wiki. Adapt fields and parameters to the target language and its available templates.
  • Categorisation: Add at least two specific, relevant categories at the bottom of each article, in accordance with the project guideline.
  • Interlanguage links: Connect equivalent articles through Wikidata where possible. Aim for at least three language connections when suitable equivalents exist.
  • Authority control: Add {{Authority control}} to biographies and other applicable pages only where the target wiki supports the template and the relevant identifiers are available.
  • Dates: Use the target wiki's date conventions in published content. The YYYY-MM-DD format may be used for project tracking where appropriate.

Important: These are SciWiki project contribution standards. Meeting them does not guarantee acceptance by another Wikipedia language edition. The target wiki's own policies, templates, licensing requirements and editorial review process always apply.
